Last Night At Popstarz

Firstly, I did have a marvellous time last night. Although I think the highlight of my evening was Something Kinda Oooh by Girls Aloud up in the Rubbish Room.

It was not a usual Popstarz and it felt different. Normally there is a huge queue at the door, but it was smaller than usual. The reason?? Popstarz had to charge £5/ entry before 11 (it is normally free before 11) to cover Mr. Anderson's fee for the appearance. This pissed us off because, although I didn't have to pay, Stuart and David did.

We went to dance ourselves sick in the Rubbish room as the indie room was filling up with people who were just standing around instead of dancing.

We came down at 12:20 as Brett was due on stage at 12:30. I seriously needed to wee but I didn't want to miss Brett. By 12:50 I had to dash to the ladies, and when I returned he still wasn't on. He came on about 1!

The stage, which is normally used as a dance floor, had 2 giant flower arrangements that wouldn't have gone amiss on an altar during a funeral.

Brett was received with lots of cheering and applause. He sat down on his stool, grabbed his guitar and opened with the Infinite Kiss. MISTAKE. Few people in the crowd probably new that song. It was a gorgeous performance though.

He also keep complaining about the noise level and telling people to be quiet so he could hear himself.

He then sang Love Is Dead, The Living Dead, The Wild Ones, Trash (between each song Shhhing the crowd, it felt like being at school) and for an encore he did a bit of Clowns and So Young.

Brett sang beautifully and his voice echoed throughout the high ceilings of the Scala loudly and clearly; however, I think doing a solo acoustic set at a club was a mistake. He could have used a backing track if he wanted to be alone. People wanted to dance and bounce around.

Basically Brett KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE. Not everyone who was there last night had come out to see you. Some people actually were there to go to POPSTARZ and were waiting for you to get off the stage so they could have a boogie. So maybe shhhhing us every 5 minutes was not the way forward.

Brett kinda came off as an old fuddy duddy.

Still, he seemed to be finding the situation rather amusing, and generally he was very much cheered and appreciate by all. But it was the strangest Popstarz PA I have ever been to.

I found it weird because it wasn't exactly a proper Popstarz night and it wasn't a proper Brett Anderson gig. Still, it was a good night and I got to be at my spiritual home and see Brett live at the same time, that's pretty cool!
