Good Things Come in Small Packages

When I got home from work last night I had a blue parcel waiting, with an Oxford postmark. I knew that was from Richard, and that the contents where a few items of clothing I’d left at his house.

I had another letter, which was from Khalid. I knew that was the 10% Discount voucher he’d promised me from Argos.

I opened Richard’s first. Inside was a folded up piece of paper. It was from a paperback novel. On one side it said Part Three. On the other side he’d written “I’m Sorry…” He hadn’t signed it. This little note upset me. If it had said anything else, said anything more, I don’t think I would have been much affected. But I was touched.

Then I opened Khalid’s letter. There was the voucher. On a big post-it note he’d drawn a happy face and underneath he’d written “Luv You!” That made me smile, and touched me more than the other note. I’m not sure why, perhaps in the end it’s because I value my long-lasting friendship more than my short-lived romance. Which is kinda obvious, I suppose.
