Stalking Pete Doherty

The channel4 documentary Stalking Pete Doherty aired last night. It should have been titled "A Study in Mental Illness."

It was fascinating, and as people are saying, a bit Alan Partridge. It was double exploitation. The filmmaker, Carlish (a manic-depressive), was clearly obsessed with Doherty and thought they had more of a relationship than they did. Carlish perhaps exploited Pete's drug use, and in turn the tabloids exploited Carlish.

Carlish seems to me a man in desperate need of psychiatric treatment. His comparisons to his relationship with Doherty to "rape" and "orgasms" was disturbing, particularly as he delivered them calmly over a pint in a pub.

Pete was wasted throghout the film, and it was quite sad to see. Many of his entourage seemed like a bunch of dickheads who encouraged him to be a waster because it was glamourous.

The documentary was one of the absurdest things I have ever seen. It was tragic, like a modern day Grim Brother's fairytale. Although I did laugh at the end when the narrator said "Carlish is now looking for his next subject for a documentary", it was like a warning to run and hide before he got you, too.
